Over the last few days I have been thinking a lot about how life is all about threshold…staying just above or below or right on line.
The definition of threshold:
a : the point at which a physiological or psychological effect begins to be produced <has a high threshold for pain>
b : a level, point, or value above which something is true or will take place and below which it is not or will not
In our professions, you strive to work enough to pay the bills. But not so much that we jeopardize relationships with others, time spent enjoying what is around us, and appreciation for what we have outside of materials. There are times when we are so concerned about not disappointing our co-workers that we lose sight on why we are even in the profession we have chosen.
Training within a certain threshold allows greater adaptation in training stimulus. It is important to not train to hard on easy days and train hard enough on the harder days. It’s important to train and race hard enough to gain the experience and exposure but not so hard that injuries sideline you from the original goal. Finding that threshold can be close to impossible at times.
Some show emotion, others choose to internalize their emotions and bottle up their feelings. In relationships sometimes one person neutralizes the other. Within relationships comes expectations. There are thresholds of living one’s life and trying to live up to expectations of others. This is where finding that threshold again becomes difficult. Staying above or below the threshold rarely strengths a relationship. Finding an agreed threshold again is the challenge, staying there is the a feat in itself.
Having enough to live comfortably within your individual parameters. Some say money creates happiness others say money creates pain and stress. Money is a mode to living life for some. For others money is the threshold for which you live by. For me, money is simply the means for paying for some necessities and I forever will look at money only as the threshold for dealing with some daily necessities, necessities I hope to conserve on and necessities that I hope I can be more efficient at using.
We want to stay at threshold. Working and training hard to show our commitment, determination, and perseverance. Sometimes having to make sacrifices in other areas to stay at threshold. Threshold runs are about staying on pace. The pace of life can sometimes be overwhelming but it’s about staying at threshold, not backing down but not attempting to over-ride the original plan.
Life and threshold training. It’s really the same thing. Stay on pace!
