Favorites for training and racing!

Had the idea while out this AM on an easy brisk run through town. What a peaceful way to spend 40 minutes this morning. Grateful and blessed despite other adversities.

Here are a few things that make my running and training even more enjoyable.

The GRID

“It features a 3-dimensional surface whereas traditional foam rollers have a flat surface and prohibit bloodflow at the point of pressure. The Matrix of 3-D Distrodensity Zones allows for blood and oxygen to channel through and create elasticity in the muscle to deliver a precision massage associated with Self-Myofascial Release Therapy. With its hollow core and sturdy EVA foam construction, the GRID uses less foam than your ordinary foam roller and will not break down with normal day-to-day use.”

I personally use this product daily. Frequently before workouts to loosen up tight tissue and after workouts to loosen up shortened muscles and break up adhesions. I honestly don’t know how I could get by without this product.  I also use this product to increase core strength and improve postural integrity. .

Clif Shot Bloks

Do you HATE energy gels? The consistency, the stickiness, the taste. Clif has your answer. Kids and adults alike will fall head over heals for the Shot Bloks. Multiple flevors, some with caffeine and others without, these little bursts of energy taste amazing and work perfectly.

“CLIF SHOT BLOKS are the latest nutrition option for endurance athletes. SHOT Bloks come in chewable, 33 calorie cubes, making it easy to customize and track caloric and electrolyte intake during long outings and races.”

My favorite flavors are orange for the AM’s and mountain berry for the afternoon’s. Secret…I have even cracked these open and eaten them as fruit snacks. Also recommended for kids during long soccer, basketball, etc tournaments when they don’t want to eat. Ideal for endurance athletes needing to replenish calories during long workouts. Stop by and choose between 8 different flavors.

Vibram FiveFingers Bikila

“Oh, those funny looking toe shoes”…”What are those things”…. “How do your toes fit”…. “Are those comfortable”….”What if you step on something like a stone”… “Don’t you need more cushion”… “I want those”…

I have heard it all! Yes I LOVE running in my FiveFingers. No, they are not my primary running shoe, nor will they be. But they are an excellent supplement to my arsenal of training equipment. They indeed promote a more natural and efficient running stride minimizing impact and stress on the joints. They improve foot strength and increase proprioceptive muscle activity. Our foot was built the way it was to act as a spring mechanism and so by running without a heavy and high profile heel, runner’s become more efficient finding the mid-foot strike pattern.

From Vibram website…

“Unlike any other running shoe on the market. A breakthrough in running shoe design,Bikila® is our first model designed specifically to promote a more natural, healthier and more efficient forefoot strike. While many folks have been running in their Vibram FiveFingers® for years, the Bikila® is our first model created exclusively for a more natural running experience.”

CEP Running Compression Socks

The thought of paying $60 for socks had me a bit on edge. Do they work? Was this just another fad? I waited a year and talked to other athletes, Dr.’s, physical therapists, coaches, etc. After a year plus of watching CEP socks spread like a wildfire. I was ready to test them out. WOW…UNBELIEVABLE.. these WORK. Not only do they feel amazing on but they stimulate circulation and provide muscle and joint stabilization.

Muscles need oxygen to perform. Oxygen is transported to muscles via blood. The better the blood flow in the arteries, the better the muscles are served and this can be enhanced by medical grade compression.

Why compression socks over the compression sleeves. Both are great and will promote circulation. The compression socks have an added Achilles tendon protector that can provide additional support and protection.

Hammer Nutrition Recoverite

After workouts it is crucial to get protein and carbohydrates into your system to help with muscle repair and re-supplying of glycogen. I have found that Hammer Recoverite is the highest quality and easiest to digest. With only 2 grams of sugar compared to other formula’s with more than 40 grams of sugar, Hammer Recoverite provides the needed nutrients without spiking blood sugar levels.

Taken from Hammer Nutrition website…

“Recoverite supplies your body with the proper 3:1 ratio of complex carbohydrates and the highest quality whey protein isolate, along with generous amounts of multi-beneficial glutamine (a whopping 3 grams per serving!), the potent antioxidant l-carnosine, and a full-spectrum electrolyte profile. The result is rapid and enhanced recovery, which allows you to obtain the maximum value from all your hard workouts, ideally prepping your body for your next workout or race. Make sure you’re recovering right with Recoverite and remember, it makes a superb meal replacement drink as well. Train hard, recover right today and feel great tomorrow.

Extra Benefits:
The amino acid glutamine, also contained in Hammer Whey, plays a vital role in the health of the muscles, immune system, and digestive tract. Glutamine is arguably the key “recovery amino” as it (A) helps boost the immune system (B) helps to reduce the symptoms of over training (C) plays a role in enhancing glycogen synthesis (D) stimulates muscle protein synthesis for the rebuilding of lean muscle tissue.”

My favorite flavor is the strawberry just mixed with cold water. Simple and refreshing!

Craft Apparel

There is so much to be excited about in Craft apparel, especially there winter apparel and base layering system. There really is nothing comparable to the technical aspects and performance of there products. I have used their base layers from cycling, skiing, running, and snow-shoeing. There is nothing that keeps you warmer yet breaths and provides moisture management keeping the wind off your chest. Add to that one of Craft’s AMAZING jackets and you will not even notice the dropping temps.!!!

Performance Running Outfitters carries Craft apparel and accessories to make your winter runs more enjoyable.

Brooks Launch

I have been running in Brooks shoes for a long time and my current favorites are the Green Silence and the Launch. Both lighter weight, great amount of cushion and yet provide a smooth transition and natural feel.

From BrooksRunning.com

  • Houston, we have an honor! Runner’s World has awarded the Launch “Best Debut” in the Winter 2010 Shoe Guide in its December 2009 issue, on newsstands Nov. 4, 2009.

With an incredibly flexible outsole and seamless transition, this lightweight neutral trainer will get you from start to finish, whether for a tempo run or in a race. Add to that the lower-profile midsole and minimal upper, and it’s 3, 2, 1 . . . blast off!

Performance Running Outfitters carries an extensive amount of shoes and provides a free foot and gait analysis allowing runners to use the treadmill and allowing staff to video tape each individuals mechanics.

Norma-Tec MVP Boots

After a hard workout or preparing for an upcoming race? This is your tool!

The NormaTec MVP (“Most Valuable Pump”) Sports Medicine Technology was created from the successful collaboration of physicians and athletes. Unlike the simple intermittent compression devices which have been around for decades, the NormaTec MVP mimics normal physiology to help athletes recover rapidly after workouts, injury and surgery. Although static external compression through wraps and compression garments has been used for years, the NormaTec MVP’s physiologically-based dynamic compression profoundly improves circulation and alleviates symptoms.

The NormaTec MVP has become the treatment modality of choice for athletic trainers around the country. Top Pro and College teams, the U.S. Navy SEALS, the Garmin-Chipotle Pro Cycling team, and other serious athletes seeking the best recovery tool are among those already incorporating the MVP into their daily protocols. 1. I was actually just looking into compression socks. Seems like an interesting phenomenon, I will need to try it out sometimes. Also, nice tip on the Recoverite, I’ll be adding it to my shelves. Thanks!
